Episode 20: Rubber Thrusters

In "Obama Watch," Michelle gets a comic book deal but the girls are still without a dog.

The "Cute, Tragic, & Disgusting Animal story" segment brings us news of a pink dolphin! A short pony causes lots of distress for British emergency services. Finally, sadly, little hippoFarasi ("Swede of 2008") has a death sentence because those Europeans refuse to teach "abstinence only" in their zoo schools.

Crime? Dr. Rueben is a fake!

In "News Cruise for the People," a man is charged over eighty-one BILLION dollars for gas. My 2nd favorite story of the night (next to short pony): A paraplegic walks again, but then is almost immediately arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Finally, Chris and Meg breeze over some cool tech tricks that may or may not work and some guy quits his job in a delicious fashion.

Episode 18: We're Official

Chris and Megan waste time during the first half-hour to lead up to our first official News Cruise interview. We had a lovely phone chat with Joe Philipson (HI) and Carlos Urreta (NY) of Real Geeks Ride about their upcoming bicycle ride across the country! Unfortunately the recording of this episode didn't even make it five minutes into the show. So if you missed out, we're so sorry! But, we're crossing our fingers that we can get a hold of another recording.

Shenanigans! A victim pulls one over on some thieves. Tom foolery! A man is tricked into driving nine hours to see a fake woman. Nonsense! A teen tries to scam his way into $37,000 dollars worth of candy.

Love is in the air? Not if your date is constantly texting. Or if you're a sour-puss teen in Salt Lake City. However, if you're a 81 year-old magician, there is hope!

-Missing dog found after cold winter
-The CIA is thinking with their heads finally, or are they?
-Ecstasy is no more dangerous than riding a horse
-Americains cain't spel
-Python eats kitty
-A science project blows up and this isn't any volcano

Whew, that was a lot of stories.

Cute, tragic, and disgusting animal stories: A newly discovered sea squirt is carnivorous. An orangutan ruins t-shirts for his cage mates by using one to escape and un-escape. And finally, a crowd-pleasing walrus plays the sax.

American Idol judges misunderstand a colloquial expression. And a mystery 'stuntman' suffers injuries on the pre-production set of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.

Japanese students bring a piece of history that hits a little too close to home (this sentence is just awful, and i apologize). Lastly-the iPhone now does everything.

New Semester, New Night!

A new semester begins here at UNCG tomorrow and that means that The News Cruise is back in business!
Slight change, however; instead of our usual Thursday night slot at 11p, we have been moved to Monday nights at 11p-1a. The first show will be next week, NOT TODAY. Happy MLK, by the way However, if you still can't tune in at that time during the semester, either via the actual radio or live stream, we are continuing to podcast the show (so you can listen anytime!). Also we are working towards making our podcasts available through iTunes; it has just been a matter of us being lazy.

So here's to an exciting new semester full of new(s) stories, new theme songs, and new segments! Please vote in the poll to the right, so that we know what YOU want to hear! Stay tuned and thanks for listening!

I made a few slight changes to the blog, all good:

I changed the template ever so slightly. It is the same color scheme and, essentially, is the same as before
I changed the poll. (Results from last poll: 100% of people just love the News Cruise (n=9) and can barely wait one week between shows)
I added a link to the top in the right column (look to your right) that directly links you to WUAG live stream.

Chris and I find out this week when our show for the Spring semester (if we got it, that is) and so, of course, we'll keep you updated on that news. I think if for some reason we do not get the show this semester, we will do the show anyways broadcasting from Chris' room. I haven't talked to him about this yet.

Sorry it has been so long since the last update. Megan and I have been out of town, alternately having surgery for mouth thingies, celebrating Christmas, celebrating New Years (during which time we were in the same town which was out of both of our towns that we were in when we were out of our initial town), and having surgery for throat thingies.

I just wanted to provide a brief update to anyone who may visit this blog that: It is not dead!

HIATUS.

Exam Week Update

Hello readers/listeners!

Sorry I haven't updated the news stories yet. The piece of paper with the list has been lost in my paper shuffle I call "trying to study for exams." I will have them posted as soon as I locate the paper (it's around here somewhere, i swear!).

Also, since it is exam time, WUAG is on Christmas break schedule as of Tuesday (12/9). This means that The News Cruise will not be airing tonight. However, do not fear! Chris and I are going to be doing The News Cruise on Monday night (12/15) at 9p until 11p, right after the Sports Cycle. We hope to be back with regular programming in the Spring semester. We'll keep you updated.

For now, enjoy a silly picture of The News Cruise cast from almost 2.5 years ago!

Oh, and one last thing: though I was not able to catch Ryland Bouchard at The Space (a WUAG presents show on Friday 12/5). I had the pleasant surprise of accidentally catching him and his touring entourage from Portland at a nice gathering of a house show hosted by fellow substitute DJ, Sam Martin. If you didn't catch him on Friday, look him up! Also the night ended with Sam and his brother Ben's performance piece, which proved to be one of the most interesting and strangest thing I've seen in a long time. So, GO TO SHOWS! SUPPORT LOCAL ART! EVEN IF IT'S WEIRD!

Unfortunately, Chris and I are in different cities, both of which are not Greensboro, so there will be no "News Cruise" tonight.

WOW, I am terrible at blogging. Granted, I had a rough couple of weeks but after weeks of not updating, I've run out of excuses other than just being pure lazy. This episode of The News Cruise was cut short because Chris and I were being good DJ's and supporting local music, better yet, supporting local music supported by our radio station WUAG. Workday Schoolnight opened for Rafter at "The Gathering Spot" (aka "The Gspot") on Tate Street. I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the music, venue and, eventually, the turnout of the crowd-save for a few obnoxious dancers (not really my style).

On to the news stories:

We opened with a story about history; Hitler only had one ball! Also, the big 3 (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) are broke, yet flying their private jets is still mere pocket change.

In "Cute, Tragic, and Disgusting Animal Stories" Chris and I discuss the return of the rats to Hamelin. A cute(?) animal is rediscovered after 80 years of being thought extinct. A 90 year old turtle finally gets his groove back, but has an affinity for the wrong species. And who can ever deny the awesomeness of a dog in a wheelchair?

We cut "Crime" short, but it was still interesting no less. A law student takes justice into his own hands. And, you can't be a druggie hipster and green.

In "News Cruise for the People:" we report a story about a guy who proposes toilets for Mt Everest. And, if you want to feel like a quadrillionaire, go to Zimbabwe. I said "feel," you'll actually only have about 1.00 USD.

And finally, because it's been a week, I can't remember if Chris and I talked about our natural awkwardness, but it may have been apparent even without us talking about it.

I must also add that after The News Cruise, in retrieving our bicycles from the bike rack on Tate Street, Chris and I saw two dudes drunkenly get into their car. When they pulled out, backed into the adjacent car. Being the good civilians that us News Cruisers are, we called the police. We reported it as accurately as possible (license plate # and everything!), and as we talking to the police the owner of the car came out. It turned out to be no other than fellow WUAGer, DJ Prez! I found out I had the same birthday as the lady cop. The police left us with hope that the guys would be found and, a couple of days later, they found the guys. and I'm assuming the correct actions were taken to make sure they were responsible for their actions.

So what did we learn this week readers/listeners? Support WUAG in its endeavor to have a new venue. Listen to the News Cruise, even when it's shortened, and DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!

In "Cute, Tragic, and Disgusting Animal Stories" we changed the "Tragic" to "Terrifying" in reporting a story about a giant spider eating a bird. Animals are scientifically proven to be good for your health. And lastly a cute Iraqi puppy gets adopted by a U.S. soldier.

It's an exciting week in "Crime" where a Grandma gets arrested for keeping a child's ball. A man pretending to be a real cop pulls over an actual real cop. Also, a woman on the lamb finally gets arrested and sentenced 40 years for scarring her ex's butt with gasoline and a match.

"Pallin' with Palin": Sarah Palin has a budget of $150,000 for her clothes and people are ups--OH WHO CARES!?

Our combined "Space and Science News" segment contained stories of x-rays from scotch tape, a Turkish UFO, and a new alternative to being just plain ol' creamated.

In the human interest segment of "The News Cruise for the People," the world's largest sandwich is ruined by chaos ensuing Iranians. A woman doubles as a notebook. A broom store in Japan doesn't have a handle on its business. A Raleigh man builds his own coffin.

And lastly "The Official News Cruise DUH!!" goes to a story from the BBC reporting that students are using speed to help them in school.

Episode 7: Our New-found Wealth

Megan and Chris make plans to spend their newly-acquired millions in foreign lottery winnings and Nigerian trust fund money. Also, a drunk pony wins the hearts of many.

Episode 6: Comparing Childhoods

This week, Chris and Megan debut a few new segments and argue over who had the better childhood based on parental sibling preference, creek proximity, and ice cream man frequency.

Megan and Chris opened the show talking of an "author" telling her story Skin, one tattoo at a time. The Bollywood Strike is over. And "King of the Internet" Chris Berg explains the concept of being "Rick Rolled" to viral video novice Megan, after reporting that Rick Astley may be getting a pointless award from MTV.

In our segment "Cute, Tragic, and Disgusting Animal Stories" we announce that fish pedicures are now illegal in Washington state. In Austrailia, a snake attacks a sleeping girl. And Megan proves her superior internet skills to "King of the Internet" Chris Berg by quickly finding information about this snake perpetrator-slaty grey snake. In Taiwan, a mouse kills a snake. And finally British police taser a sheep for blocking traffic.

A new segment we called "Pallin' with Palin" contained discussion on roots of Sarah Palin's accent and her condemnation of women who don't support other women. Ahem, Sarah Palin

The "Crime" segment was fairly short this week, with an idiot who gets arrested in a jail parking lot, right after he posts bail from a previous crime. And a high school girl fed her teachers hash cakes.

"Science Time!": Why having affair could kill you. High fertility and high voices in women go hand in hand. And finally, one British jerk says that UFOs have been among us since the 1940s and is aiming to one-up us Americans.

Lastly, we had a new segment called "News Cruise for the People," basically human interest stories that didn't fit any where else. These included a grandmother lost in Italy was found. In Cambodia, a couple makes a quite literal divorce. And finally, we concluded with a story about American jerk Richard Fuld getting punched in the face.

Chris and Megan end the show with talking about hurting themselves.

Note: We decide that Europe cannot be a definite enemy of the show. We'll take it on a case by case basis. For example: "Fusion Man" (see episode 5)-friend. Cops who tasered sheep-enemy.

Episode 5: Inspiration and Unspiration

This week Megan and Chris make it to the booth without any stumbles or rain. We dedicate the first half of the show to inspirational tales, and the second half to ruining the good feelings from the first half.

We also opened up the hour with our new theme song--thanks goes out to Jessamyn Stanley, WUAG news director, for her vocals!

The first hour was filled with inspiration of people "making it" by getting a new prosthetic leg over a pint. A girl deals with being blind 3 days of every six. "Fusion Man" makes it across the English channel flying "a little bit like a bird." What else made it? Falcon-1 made it. Where? TO SPACE! And finally Clay Aiken came out of the closet. Who knew?

After all the inspiring stories, crime befell the second hour of The News Cruise. A drunken man farted on police officers. "Grade" students making "super-meth?" You bet. A tragic animal crime story was brought to us from Brazil, where a man thought he could get away trafficking 200 birds. One of the best crime stories of them all: Guy uses Craigslist to make a successful armed robbery

To end the hour we discussed a Wall-Streeter turned monk. And finally, The News Cruise made a new enemy of the show: Australian 'Rangas (red heads). Who denies a free trip to the zoo?

The purpose of this blog is for documenting news stories that are discussed on "The News Cruise" for our listeners to easily refer to and to avoid any criminal activity concerning plagerism.
"The News Cruise" is a specialty radio show on the one of Greensboro, NC's popular college radio stations, 103.1 FM WUAG, on Thurdays nights 11p-1a. If you don't live in the Greensboro area and would like to listen, you can always stream it live from the website previously linked.

The concept of "The News Cruise" is simple as 1, 2, 3:
1. We find recent interesting (not always important) news stories
2. Summarize them for our listening audience
3. Let our opinions fly (always in accordance with the FCC, of course)
Usually we try to fit the news stories into segments or categories such as "Cute, tragic, and disgusting animal stories," "Crime and Punishment," and "News from Space." The end of the world as we know it also seems to be a popular topic. This is just to name a few, but we don't like to limit ourselves.

"The News Cruise" is in its second season. It first began in the Summer of 2008 and was hosted Chris Berg, me (Megan Wallrichs), and our friend Bobby Williams. Over the course of the summer we acquired a steady repertoire of listeners (delivery drivers and clowns included), local and worldwide (Canada and Belgium) Chris and I will continue to host "The News Cruise" during the Fall semester of 2008.

Chris and I have been DJ's at WUAG for 7 semesters and have been co-hosts for 4 out of those 7. Not completely relying on the biased opinions of our friends, we have reason to believe that we have good radio chemistry and have been known on occasion to be quite funny.

In hopes of increasing "The News Cruise's" popularity we have some exciting future plans that we have or hope to implement soon:

-Flyers promoting our show
-The ability for on-air phone guests
-In-studio guests
-Podcasting
-Contests (with prizes!)
